Technical capability
We work in a deliberately narrow set of well-supported technologies and know them properly, rather than adopting whatever is newest. Decisions are made on what will remain supportable years from now.
Company Profile
Copley Technologies LTD develops reliable, user-focused software applications and digital products. We are based in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, and work with clients across the United Kingdom.
About us
A private limited company operating as a software engineering studio.
Copley Technologies LTD is a private limited company registered in England and Wales, operating from a registered office at 28 Borough Road, Dunstable. The company is directed by John Frederick Copley. Our work is software engineering: we design, build, release and maintain applications, both to client commission and on our own account as published software products.
We are a small studio and we intend to remain one. Our clients deal directly with the engineers doing the work, which removes a layer of interpretation between what an organisation needs and what gets built. It also means the people who scoped a system are the people who support it afterwards, so accumulated knowledge about a client’s operations is not lost at handover.
Our commercial model is straightforward. Client projects are quoted against an agreed written specification, delivered in milestones, and followed by a maintenance arrangement if the client wants one. Our own products are developed and funded internally, which gives us direct control over their quality and the pace at which they develop.
Capability
A focused technology base, chosen for longevity rather than novelty.
We build web-based applications using established, well-supported languages, frameworks and databases, deployed to managed cloud infrastructure. We deliberately keep our working set small: a narrower stack, understood in depth, produces software that is easier to maintain and hand over than a broad one understood superficially.
Alongside new development, a substantial part of our work involves existing systems — reviewing a codebase inherited from another supplier, upgrading software that has fallen behind on dependencies, integrating applications that were never designed to talk to each other, or migrating data out of tools an organisation has outgrown. This work is often less visible than a new build, but it is frequently where the greater operational value is.
Where a requirement falls outside what we can deliver competently — specialist hardware, regulated activity requiring particular authorisation, or a technology we do not work in — we say so and, where we can, point the client toward someone better placed to help.
Principles
These are the working principles the company operates by, and they are the basis on which we accept and run projects.
We work in a deliberately narrow set of well-supported technologies and know them properly, rather than adopting whatever is newest. Decisions are made on what will remain supportable years from now.
Software is not finished at launch. Dependencies age, requirements shift and organisations change. We plan for that from the outset and treat maintenance as a continuing commitment.
Clients understand their own operations better than we ever will. Our job is to translate that knowledge into software, which requires listening carefully and asking direct questions.
We describe technical matters in terms that support a decision. If something is going to take longer or cost more than expected, we say so at the point we know it.
We are self-directed and take on work we believe we can deliver well. That allows us to turn down a project when we are not the right fit, and to say so early.
Software is judged by the people who use it every day. We design around their actual tasks and test with them, because a system that is technically correct but unusable has failed.
